In spite of bowing to popular objections to the first Gehry design for the King Alfred site, Brighton and Hove City Council has once again chosen a design from the same source without any further consultation with the people of the city.

We are informed "the designs for the site are still changing every day" which is small comfort if they are still to be on the same grandiose scale and at ever-increasing cost.

The new development means building a tight concentration of housing and businesses totally out of keeping with the surrounding area which can only harm the living conditions of local residents and increase the strain on the local infrastructure.

If a 600-space car park is deemed necessary, surely this must mean a considerable increase in traffic is anticipated in an already busy area.

The fact that Brad Pitt is taking an interest hardly seems to be a recommendation, even if he does take up a £3m "home" in the project.

He is unlikely to spend a great deal of time there. And will people with that sort of money want to live alongside affordable housing and a busy (hopefully) leisure centre?

Whatever happens to the King Alfred site, I trust the new sports centre and swimming pool will be up and running before the present one is demolished.
