People all over Sussex have been raising money for the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami through collections and a variety of events.

Customers at Redroaster Coffee House, in St James's Street, Brighton, handed over more than £270.

Another £1,348 was raised when a day's takings were contributed.

Staff at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester have been helping.

Consultant ophthalmologist Thisara Niyadurupola, a trustee for the Sri Lankan Medical and Dental Association in the UK, is collecting items and donations to assist the charity's work and hospital staff are being asked to donate practical items such as tents and blankets.

A British Olympic swimmer will take to the water in a marathon effort to boost the relief operation.

Lisa Chapman, 20, of Flimwell, near Hastings, will be among more than 70 swimmers from Loughborough University aiming to swim 100,000 metres in just 17 hours.

Mayor of Eastbourne, Barbara Goodall, has launched an Aid for Asia appeal, backed by Eastbourne Tory MP Nigel Waterson.

Proceeds of a concert at the Congress Theatre on Sunday, January 16 will be donated to the appeal.

Mr Waterson said: "It is almost impossible to grasp the full extent of this disaster.

"Many of my constituents have contacted me asking what they can do to help."

Bullit Couriers, of Charlotte Street, Brighton is donating ten per cent of its January profits to the tsunami appeal.

Theo Birch, a director of the company, said: "Like everybody, we have been extremely shocked by the disaster which is still unfolding in southern Asia.

"Many of us have travelled or spent holidays in the region."

Brighton photographer Jack Lamport-Mitchell has pledged to give 25 per cent of the money from every picture he sells in January to charities dealing with the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.

Mr Lamport-Mitchell, 67, of Bear Road, Brighton, specialises in nude photography and currently has exhibitions running at the Pulp Kitchen gallery in Bond Street, Brighton, and Harry's restaurant in Church Road, Hove.

Albion fans generated £3,051 for the tsunami disaster appeal at Monday's home match against Watford at Withdean Stadium.

Twelve collectors from the Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club manned the gates with their buckets so fans could donate to Rotary International's own fund to help those in South East Asia.

The club is also giving £10,000 from its trust funds to the appeal.
