CBI leader Digby Jones spoke of his delight at being knighted today and said he believed the honour was recognition of how business was now well regarded across the country.

The 49-year-old director-general said industry was an integral part of the UK with organisations such as the CBI working hard to improve the lives of workers as well as the economy.

Sir Digby has worked tirelessly for Britain's biggest business group since his appointment five years ago and has been asked to stay on an extra two years as proof of the success of his non-stop, enthusiastic style of leadership.

He visits business men and women in a different region of the UK every week to keep on top of issues affecting firms of all sizes.

"I like to think the voice of business has become more understood under my leadership, but this has been a team effort and I am delighted for everyone at the CBI.

"I have given the organisation back to its members as well as pushing issues I feel passionate about such as training and skills."

Under Mr Jones's leadership the CBI has a stronger voice overseas, with a new office in Washington, a bigger presence in Brussels and plans for a new office in China.

"Politicians of all parties listen to us now and I feel very proud and thrilled today at this honour," added the Birmingham-born businessman who lists rugby, football, theatre and military history among his hobbies.
