Albion manager Mark McGhee today backed Adam Virgo to make the swift switch from international centre half to goalscoring centre forward.

Virgo returns to the Seagulls' attack from a three-match ban at Millwall tomorrow after an outstanding debut in defence for Scotland Futures in Tuesday's 3-0 defeat in Germany.

McGhee said: "He is very flexible and I don't think he will have any problems.

"He has been playing at rightback and centre forward for us, so to go back to centre half at that level was more of a challenge for him than coming back and playing centre forward for us.

"I spoke to Tommy Burns and Tommy said Virgs was Scotland's best player."

Former Millwall manager McGhee is not worried by his old club's return to form in Tuesday's 2-1 win at Wolves.

"Wolves are struggling, so we shouldn't get too carried away by that. There is a performance in us that can win this game, if we can bring it out."

Meanwhile, McGhee has appealed against an FA charge of using abusive and/or insulting words to fourth official Jon Beadle in the tunnel following Albion's controversial defeat at Ipswich last month.

"It is not so much an appeal, more an objection," he said. "I have admitted swearing, but what was reported was the tail-end of a conversation and nobody has asked me why I said what I said."
