Taking its cue from the wealth of female talent in Brighton, the intention of Finest Female Flare is to provide a women-only showcase for local songwriters.

And, judging by the response so far, there really is a need for it.

"The idea has had great feedback with loads of interest from all kinds of female artists," says organiser Pablo, of Backbeat Records.

Starting off as an acoustic event but with a view to going electric at Concorde 2 early next year, the night will put on different female vocalists each fortnight, playing acoustic guitars, pianos and light percussion.

Taking place in the intimate, candle-lit space above Polar Central, tonight's bill will feature six up-and-coming artists who were, or are, students at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Alongside Alice Shaw, Laura Fraser and Piadora, you can see Megan Goodwin, who has been known to complement piano lines with congas and draw comparisons with Joss Stone, Louise Havell, who is described as "Portishead meets Moloko meets Beth Orton", and Emillie Watts, who has the distinction of having road-tested a song which is destined for Geri Halliwell.

Pop along and you might just spot the next Dido - or, with a bit of luck, something a whole lot more interesting.

Starts 7.30pm, Tickets £2.50, Tel 07779 177287
