I was fortunate enough to attend the Family visit at Ford Open Prison on October 28, I feel I have to reply to the negative report of the event (The Argus, November 9).
Firstly, this was not a "party" as reported, it was an extended visit and was part of the Black History Month. It was not festivities and celebrations.
Yes, they set up a bouncy castle for the children and a steel band was playing in the background. The inmates also cooked Jamaican food as this was in keeping with the event. I fail to see how this constitutes a party.
The families and their children have a right to spend time with their loved ones.
As for the prison officer saying it was like a holiday camp, he/she must have been at a different venue, as this was not the environment I experienced.
The children spent time interacting with their fathers in a relaxed atmosphere.
What's wrong with that? I fail to see how it can be deemed as a reward for inmates. It was a family visit and they are entitled to them.
The fact it was a bit different is irrelevant. Maybe someone should ask the children how they felt about it. I can tell you that the looks on their faces said it all for me and proved it was worthwhile, even if it did upset a few officers.
I hope they repeat this successful event and praise those who made it possible. I'm sure it was not their intention to offend anyone.
