The new £500,000 bulk-handling terminal at Shoreham Port has taken its first ship - heralding the start of a long-term contract with a building materials firm.
Shoreham Port chief executive Rod Johnstone signed a ten-year deal with Tarmac Topblock for the importation of 60,000 tonnes of building materials every year.
Each vessel will carry up to 4,500 tonnes of pumice and ash which will be offloaded and taken to Tarmac's manufacturing plant in Ford, near Arundel.
The opening of the terminal, which was purpose built to service Tarmac on land that had been redundant for years, was seen as a major step forward for the Port.
Mr Johnstone said: "Our business strategy for the port is to secure its long term financial future and retain and create jobs for people in the area. Our investment in this terminal clearly indicates our determination to do that."
