A new generation of "gadget grandparents" is emerging as older consumers embrace technology, according to new research.

A growing number of over-50s are splashing out on DVD and CD players. More than a quarter spend regularly on films and music.

The older generation's outlook is getting younger, said Jacqueline Smith, head of Lloyds TSB 50+, which commissioned the research.

Attitudes to saving and spending among the over-50s are also beginning to mirror those of their thirtysomething children.

Almost a quarter of over-50s surveyed said they spent a sizeable chunk of their disposable income on the latest gadgets.
