I would like to reassure Malcolm Dawes (Letters, October 26) that
the council has not attempted to remove the listing from the fine
tram shelters on the Old Steine.
Nor have they been neglected. The council has repaired the shelters on numerous occasions over the past few years but sadly they have been repeatedly vandalised.
On some occasions, the windows have been damaged within hours of being reglazed. The council is now taking advice about how best to preserve these historic structures and prevent further damage.
We are considering a number of options, including major refurbishment to provide a shelter which is functional, suitable for its purpose and presentable, as well as fully respecting it as a building of architectural and historic interest.
