There's something to be said for great comedy traditions, principally that they lose the element of surprise after 20 or 30 years.

Jasper Carrot was doing Jeff Green's show in the Seventies and Eighties.

Men and women don't understand each other and sex can be quite difficult and embarrassing - well done Jeff, I don't think any comedian has ever mentioned that before, how ground-breaking.

He does what he does well, getting plenty of laughs out of the female fascination for cushions and how honesty would ruin the world of relationships.

"Do those jeans make you look fat? No I think it is all the ice cream you've been eating."

But the whole thing, including the carefully gauged shock value of his reflections on oral sex, seems staid, because we have heard it all before.

While great comedy is ultimately about honesty, you can't help thinking there is an element of fakery in Green's descriptions of failed relationships and failures in general.

He is a very humorous writer and a very competent performer, just like so many people who have done exactly the same jokes before him.
