Brighton teacher Mike Coyle clocked one of the fastest 50-mile times ever by a Sussex rider when he finished second in the Bognor Regis CC Open at Fontwell.

The event was won by Hampshire clubman Steve Walkling (VC St Raphael) in 1hr.49min.59sec. Coyle (VC Etoile) clocked 1hr.50min.44sec.

Nick Rudkin (Eastbourne Rovers) was fourth in 1hr.55min.20sec and Storrington's Mark Jones (GS Stella) was fifth in 1hr.56min.36sec.

Eastbourne Rovers won the team event, with Rudkin backed by Stuart Medhurst (1hr.59min.54sec) and Peter Moon (2hr.0min.55sec).

Coyle said: "The heat made it extra hard and I ran out of water towards the end but I was very pleased with my time."

Brighton Excelsior's 25-mile event at Steyning was won by Sussex rider Paul Woodman (In Gear) who recorded 56min.28sec.

There was a close battle for second with Paul Jones (Crawley CC) clocking 57min.51sec and Steve Woodbridge (GS Stella) just one second slower.

Sussex 100-mile champion Andy Green (Brighton Mitre) finished fourth in 58min.12sec. Crawley CC (Jones, Paul Byford 58min.46sec, Alan Denman 1hr.0min.47sec) won the team event while Angela Nainby (East Grinstead) won the women's race in 1hr.4min.43sec.

Sussex Track League leader Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers) was a reluctant spectator at the penultimate meeting at Preston Park after injuring his shoulder in a riding accident.

He believes Giles Wingate (Principia) will take the league now after seeing him win the eight-lap race. Winton has 161 points but he will also miss the final meeting and Wingate has whittled his lead down to just three points.

Sussex-based South African Gary Flint (In Gear) finished a close second in the National Under-23 Series 75-mile road race at Goodwood.
