It is good to see everyone realises we are poisoning the centre of our city with car pollution and something must be done.

Of course we need a park and ride scheme. It can be phased but the first phase must be at the entrance to Brighton on the A23.

There can be two or more sites, but they must be easy to find and simple to access.

They need to be connected to the computerised car park information system to show motorists approaching the city there is no reasonable hope of parking cheaply and easily in the centre.

Apart from the congestion and pollution city-centre parking causes, queuing clogs up our roads, making it dangerous for pedestrians and service and emergency vehicles.

There should be a maximum of six vehicles in a queue (as in San Francisco) and this should be policed.

Additionally, our excellent bus system needs to be further enhanced by more bus lanes and there should be priority given to a coherent fast bus lane system direct from the park and ride sites to the city centre.

City centre bus express routes, as recently proposed, are a great idea and the privately-funded seafront monorail is absolutely brilliant, although probably problematic to construct in certain places.

Cycle lanes should be extended to form a coherent network. This means filling in the gaps at difficult traffic junctions.

May the excellent car-pooling scheme increase. There should be free car parking at all voucher spaces for such vehicles.

After the debacle of Southern trains refusing to provide transport home for the British Heart Foundation bike ride cycles, I trust our MPs are approaching the Government to ensure there is an element of compulsion in providing a satisfactory train service to our city.

We will only reduce pollution and congestion in our densely-packed historic city by a whole raft of measures that should reduce the overall usage of private cars and provide a quieter, cleaner and more pleasant space for the actual people.
