A man who was stabbed to death in a pub brawl has been named by police.

As the murder inquiry into the death of landscape gardener Peter Uttley continued, flowers were laid in tribute to the father of three, who died after the fight at The Crown in the Carfax, Horsham, on Friday.

Regulars saw 33-year-old Mr Uttley, of Springfield Crescent, Horsham, fall to the floor, bleeding from the chest, while another fight continued outside the pub.

Customers gave him first aid while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

He was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill but later died of his injuries.

A friend of Mr Uttley said: "Peter was a lovely bloke. He was well-known in the area and had a lovely family.

"I think he had spent all his life in the area. It is a great tragedy."

One man whose daughter witnessed the 11pm fight said: "She was alerted to a fight outside the pub and went to a window, not realising it had kicked off inside the pub.

"She was in a real state of shock when she saw the state of the man in the pub. There was little people could do."

Dave Jones, 27, who was in The Crown at about 7pm said: "I could not believe it when I heard there had been fights and stabbings after I left.

"There were just ten people there when I was at the pub."

Frances Holland, from Ontario, Canada, added: "I came to visit what I thought was a quaint English town.

"I did not expect to find one of the main pubs closed and taped off with police officers investigating a murder."

A 21-year-old from Horsham and a 36-year-old man from Ashington have been arrested in connection with the inquiry, which involves more than 30 detectives.

Detective Chief Inspector Adam Hibbert made a plea for anyone who was in the pub at the time to get in touch with the incident room on 0845 6070999.
