My son Thomas, who is six years old, has always been concerned about the poor West Pier.

He has seen pictures when it was new and asks questions such as: "Why can't they do it up?"

When it caught fire twice, he said: "It's a shame."

Now more debris has come away. As he watched this on television he said: "Oh no, mum, not again."

I smiled a sad smile and he said: "Don't worry, mum, I've got enough money to build it up again."

I then looked at him and gave him a happy smile. Children can really be inspiring, can't they?
