Hundreds of D-Day veterans in Sussex paid a moving tribute to fallen colleagues and brought home the true cost of war (The Argus, June 7).
Former members of the armed services remembered the 60th anniversary of the day 156,000 allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy to liberate Europe from the Nazis.
While many thousands of veterans gathered in Normandy to hear the Queen pay tribute to all who took part in the campaign, a series of events took place in Sussex in soaring temperatures.
As a nation, we owe a great deal to them and should always remember those who did not return. There were many emotions shown on the faces of the veterans who have vivid memories of the events of June 6, 1944.
I felt humbled watching them and hearing their stories. Many are modest and unwilling to describe what they saw.
They are all true heroes who made a great contribution in giving us the freedom we all enjoy today.
