Paedophile doctor Robert Wells is finally behind bars today, ten years after walking free on child sex charges.

Wells was accused of indecently assaulting two girls, aged 15 and eight, in 1994 but the cases suddenly collapsed in court.

Now the mother of the eight-year-old is appalled by how he escaped justice then and was later taken on by Hampshire Police, despite concerns about his behaviour.

She told The Argus: "I was assured at the time he'd be struck off, never have contact with children and be put on the paedophile register.

"Not only has he not been struck off, he's been promoted. I'm horrified. The police knew his record and yet he became a police doctor.

"We can't have justice for our daughter now. We've had our chance. But he's gone on to destroy more lives."

Wells was used 3,371 times by Hampshire Police as a forensic medical examiner between October 2001 and February 2003, when he was arrested and became the target of the same force.

The eight-year-old gave video evidence for Wells's trial at Lewes Crown Court in 1995.

She told how he had indecently assaulted her after being called to her home in Brighton in early 1994.

Now 18, she remains traumatised.

She said: "I feel as though I've been kicked in the face and stamped on. I just feel so let down. Even if it was just an accusation, it was a very serious one at that.

"That should have been enough for them to question him. He should have been struck off."

Wells denied the charges and was freed on September 26, 1995, when Judge Alistair Troup directed the jury to order not guilty verdicts.
