A footballer fled the scene of a car crash and then hatched a plot for his brother to take the blame.

Glenn Davies, 27, who plays for Worthing Football Club, was behind the wheel of a Volvo when he was involved in a road accident in which a passenger was injured.

Later, his brother John Davies gave himself up to police and told officers he was driving at the time.

John Davies, 32, of Camber Close, Whitehawk, Brighton, repeatedly lied to officers about the crash in Egremont Place, Brighton, in October.

He kept up the story until he was challenged by officers.

The brothers appeared together in the dock at Lewes Crown Court and were warned by Judge Guy Anthony they may face jail.

Both admitted perverting the course of justice.

Glenn Davies, of Stanford Road, Brighton, also admitted careless driving, driving without insurance or a licence, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report it to police.

The court heard the accident happened on October 18 when Glenn Davies' car collided with a vehicle driven by bank worker James Welch. His mother, Vivienne, a passenger, suffered whiplash injuries and cuts to her ankle.

Sarah Thorne, defending Glenn Davies, told the court her client, who has no previous convictions, has a promising career in football.

Jonathan Edwards, defending John Davies, said his client's list of previous convictions showed a propensity for violence but nothing similar to the current offences. His last conviction was in 1999 for affray.

The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports to be prepared. The brothers were bailed until March 15 when they are due to be sentenced.
