Firefighters were called to a seafront hotel in Eastbourne at the weekend after fire broke out in a basement.

Staff at the Best Western Lansdowne Hotel, in King Edwards Parade, Eastbourne, were evacuated from the 110-bedroom building on Saturday.

The three-star hotel, which overlooks the seafront, is closed for the winter.

General manager Graham Wallis said: "We had a small fire in the basement.

"It was detected at about 7am when the alarms went off.

"We evacuated our live-in staff while firefighters damped down the basement."

He said the cause of the blaze, which caused smoke and heat damage, was still unknown.

As crews cleared up they received a call to a mosque in the town.

The building in Ashford Square was damaged by flames from a fire started next to an outside door. Police are investigating.

A family evacuated their home after an electric heater burst into flame.

Firefighters were called to the three-bedroom house in Hill Road, Eastbourne, at 3.30am on Saturday after smoke was seen pouring from an upstairs room.

The blaze is believed to have been started by clothes draped over a heater. Smoke and heat badly damaged the upstairs of the house.
