The victim of a road rage attack said he was lucky to escape unharmed after a motorcyclist threw rocks at his car.

Ronald Smithers, 74, of Worthing, was driving on the A281 towards Cowfold when the motorbike pulled up behind.

It then overtook a few minutes later and sped off towards Cowfold.

However, as Mr Smithers, whose wife was also in the car, approached The Street, Cowfold, at its junction with Brookhill, he noticed the biker standing by the roadside holding the rocks.

He threw them at the car causing £1,300 of damage to three of the windows on Mr Smithers' red Nissan sports car. The biker then got back on his bike and rode off.

Mr Smithers said: "When I approached the junction and saw him I just thought what on earth is he doing?

"He was standing there with the rocks in his hand and it was so unexpected I don't really remember much about it.

"I didn't know there was even anything wrong so I haven't got a clue why he did it.

"He began riding right up against my rear bumper and then just overtook."

Mr Smithers said he was shaken by the incident but wouldn't be put off driving.

He said: "It seems to have been just one of those one-off things.

"I don't know if he was a nutter or on drink or drugs but I couldn't see why he had a problem."

A police spokesman said: "There's no indication why it happened so at the moment we can only treat it as criminal damage."
