An internet rebellion against inflation-busting council tax rises has been launched.

PR consultant Alan Murray, 52, of Vera's Walk, Storrington, is forming a protest group through an anti-council tax web site backed by war veterans.

Sums owed to councils across Sussex may be withheld.

It comes as the Government decided to give West Sussex County Council a 4.5 per cent budget increase for next year, the second lowest figure for shire authorities. This is set to lead to more council tax rises.

Mr Murray said: "Parties of all colours are just as guilty - the Conservatives are quick to blame the Labour party for imposing a 'stealth tax' but Tory-run councils are running away with their costs."

Mr Murray's group will link with other users of isitfair.co.uk - established by a group called People Against Rises in Council Tax and backed by the Royal British Legion - to plan his assault.

A spokesman for the site said: "Our aims are to make people aware of the need for action and to have the property-value-based council tax replaced by a system that takes account of the ability to pay."

The site contains angry messages from Sussex residents, who plan to stage rallies in Worthing and Littlehampton.

Jane Robinson, of West Sussex County Council, said: "We are the county which is the lowest - with East Sussex - in the country for its grant increase."

Brighton and Hove Council's settlement this year was an the lowest-allowed increase of 3.5 per cent or £6.1m.

East Sussex received an increase of only 3.8 per cent.
