It is with great sadness and disbelief that I read the accusations which have been levelled at the residents of Firle.

Having spent much time in this delightful village and having witnessed their bonfire celebrations, I can only think those who are making these accusations of racism have been misinformed or are intent on destroying an age-old tradition.

The media, in search of a story, were selective in their use of facts. The caravan, was not torched or set fire to, it was used as a platform for part of the usual firework display.

The traditional bonfire celebrations always include topical events and, on this occasion, travellers, not to be confused with Gipsies, were topical.

These community activities are the result of a year's hard work including money-raising events which are supported and enjoyed by all the villagers.

It is difficult to understand why the lady who complained did not express her concerns to one of the organisers.

Perhaps she and her daughter were also enjoying the innocent spectacle along with everyone else. To say this was an incitement to racism is ludicrous. I believe the travellers to be of the same race as the residents of Firle.

Surely this draws attention to the fact that they need a permanent site?

This has cost a vast amount of money and police time. What a pity this was not available when the travellers caused such distress to the village. Where were the police then?

My feelings are with the organisers of the event and I hope common sense will prevail so these good people can get back to a normal life and continue to provide what this country needs, events which involve the whole community.
