East Grinstead remained a point behind leaders Old Georgians in National League division two after a 5-1 defeat of bottom side Oxford Hawks.

The game was effectively over by half time as Grinstead led 3-1.

Dilette Gilkes opened the scoring after a short corner had broken down, Mike Holland finished off a fine passing move to make it 2-0 and Duncan Howarth added a third just before the interval.

After the break, Mark Ansell scored a goal of the season contender with a tremendous lob over the keeper at speed and Richard Payne rounded things off with a penalty flick.

Player-coach Kwan Browne said: "Mark's goal was one of the best I have ever seen. If it had been at the Olympics or in the world cup they would have shown it over and over again.

"I was pleased with the result but annoyed we didn't score more.

"These games are the hardest games mentally. You are aware they are bottom of the table and you may have better players on the pitch but you still have to go out and win the game."

The only blemish for Grinstead was a late red card for Dominick Male which means he will have to serve a suspension.

Lewes failed to build on their draw with Grinstead the previous week as they lost 3-1 at Havant.

Sean Parker gave Lewes an eighth minute lead from a short corner after some great work by Will Champness but Havant levelled from their first short corner ten minutes later.

Two goals in three minutes in the second half effectively wrapped up victory for the hosts.

Lewes manager Paul Benoy said: "We are not creating enough chances. We are getting quite a lot of sustained pressure in the opposition half and even in the 25 but we are not creating chances and not scoring from our short corners."

Alistair Boyse and Marnix Achterberg played well for Lewes.
