Albion manager Mark McGhee has tipped his new Hotspur Mark Yeates as a Premiership star of the future.

The Seagulls have seen off competition from some First Division clubs to land the attack-minded Irish teenager on a month's loan from Tottenham.

Dublin-born Yeates, who can play in midfield or up front, completed his move yesterday afternoon following his first training session at Withdean.

The 18-year-old Republic of Ireland youth international goes straight into the side for his League debut in Saturday's home game against Bristol City.

McGhee revealed: "I asked about him several times when I was at Millwall.

"There is absolutely no doubt this boy is going to be a player.

"We have still to see whether he is ready to help us win games because he is young and he has not got a lot of experience.

"As far as I understand there are a host of clubs that would have taken him, but David Pleat (Spurs caretaker) appreciates the sort of place he is coming to.

"I think it is a compliment to Brighton, never mind myself, that David has allowed him to come here, because there were a lot of clubs including First Division clubs that he could have gone to.

"He plays off the left-hand side, inside left or left of a three, but he has got ability on both sides. He's a very good player."

Yeates was on the bench for Spurs' Premiership match at Middlesbrough at the end of last season.

He has been knocking on the door again this season and has played in the reserves at White Hart Lane with former Albion star Bobby Zamora.

"I've been in a lot of the squads for the Tottenham first team, but Robbie Keane, Bobby Zamora and Helder Postiga are ahead of me," Yeates said.

"I am delighted to be here. It will be good to get League experience.

"Brighton seems to be a good club going in the right direction and I'm here to do the business.

"I was meant to go to QPR at the start of the season, but a knock on the leg set me back and coming here is just as good.

"I play just behind the front two in the reserves and youth team at Tottenham but I will be pleased to play where ever the gaffer wants me to.

"Hopefully I can just do well here and then push into Tottenham's plans."

Albion will also complete the re-signing tomorrow of 20-year-old midfielder Zesh Rehman on loan from Fulham.

McGhee would like him back for the rest of the season.
