An inventor who has helped to solve Brighton and Hove's rubbish problem has won an award.

Steve Capon's binvelope won the gold consumer award at the British Invention Show in London.

The device is a collapsible box with the capacity to hold two bin bags.

It will be tested by Brighton and Hove City Council in the North Laine area in January.

It is hoped binvelopes will be useful on streets which are not big enough to sustain wheelie bins by preventing seagulls ripping open bin bags for food.

Mr Capon, 35, of Brighton, has already secured interest for the multi-use device from other countries, including the United States.

He said: "I came up with the idea for binvelope at last year's show."

Mr Capon was presented with a certificate and a glass trophy.
