A teacher with a passion for music is to become head of a primary school.
Darren Vallier, 35, will become head of Newick Primary School in January and hopes he will be able to put his talent for song writing to good use.
Mr Vallier, who has had several of his musicals performed in London's West End, first became interested in music when he played in bands as a boy.
When he went to college, his lecturer encouraged him to write his own music and shows.
Mr Vallier, who plays guitar, said: "There is a real sense of pride when you hear your songs being sung. It's an amazing feeling and a tremendous sense of satisfaction.
"Children are very honest and tell you exactly what they think of your music.
"I started as a primary teacher doing all subjects but the music came out and I often did school productions or ran singing clubs and I had my guitar with me all the time.
"To be able to play the guitar in class was great for the children."
Darren, who has worked at Goldstone Primary School in Hove for five years and has twice been acting headteacher, said he was looking forward to his first job as head.
He said: "I am absolutely over the moon and very excited. I don't run away from challenges, I would rather face them head on.
"This is another opportunity and an exciting challenge.
"I will be very sad to leave Goldstone.
"It has been very productive and successful and without the help of the pupils and parents, I wouldn't be where I am now."
