High winds fanned a blaze started by arsonists which destroyed two Goring beach huts and damaged two others.

Fire crews from Worthing were called to the huts opposite Marine Parade at 9.15pm on Friday and found there was a risk of gas cylinders exploding.

A spokesman said: "It was very windy so the fire spread quickly.

"The crews made the propane cylinders safe by cooling them with water before they were removed."

Two of the council-owned huts were wrecked and two others severely damaged in the blaze, which took more than an hour to extinguish.

Residents told police they had seen youths cycling away from the area just before the fire started and the blaze is being treated as arson.

Anyone with any information about the fire should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
