Walking out of the Sussex Eye Hospital into a clear, cloudless sunny Brighton for the first time able to see with perfect vision in one eye made me praise God for guiding the eye surgeon, anaesthetist and nurses in Pickford ward.

Although I would like to name everyone, my particular thank go to consultant Chris Liu, surgeon and registrar Luke Membrey, surgeon Mr Paul, Dr K Turner, plus operating theatre anaesthetist and nurses, senior staff nurses Gaynor Paul and Perry Maris and staff of Pickford ward, plus the night doctor and senior nurse who unblocked my water system before my body blew apart.

Some private hospitals don't have such good night cover. Without such professionals there would be no NHS, one of the world's greatest social institutions.

Hopefully, one day private medicine will be amalgamated into the NHS and no longer be a hidden drain on it.
