Four teenagers suspected of committing car crime on a nightly basis were being questioned by police today.

They were arrested in the Varndean area of Brighton in the early hours.

Police were tipped off by members of the public who saw cars being broken into.

Officers involved in Operation Shaft, dedicated to catching car criminals, raced to the scene and made the arrests.

Shaft police have been hunting a gang who, they believe, have been going out every night for weeks committing crimes.

Inspector Steve Curry said: "This was a huge success and it was due to residents' quick action.

"I want to thank them and encourage all people to act as our eyes and ears and to report anything suspicious immediately."
