Huge tailbacks built up when a car hit a crash barrier and ended up facing the wrong way.
More trouble was caused when several drivers viewing the accident took their eyes off the road and also crashed.
No one was hurt in the collisions on the northbound carriageway of the A23 Brighton-London road at Pyecombe just before 7am today.
Traffic backed up several miles to the junction with the A27 Brighton bypass.
