A schoolboy was injured by a classmate with a knife during a lesson.

The 14-year-old's fingers were cut in the incident involving a 15-year-old fellow pupil and he was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

The incident happened at Longhill High School, Falmer Road, Rottingdean, yesterday.

Police were called to the school at about 11am and the classroom was sealed off.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Taylor said: "This type of incident is thankfully very rare. The 14-year-old was not badly hurt but we're taking it very seriously as emphasised by the involvement of detectives."

Head teacher Geoff Ellis said: "Luckily no one was badly hurt. I would rather not say any more while the police investigation is going on. We will carry out our own investigation as well."

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said: "The director of children, families and schools, David Hawker, has spoken to the headteacher.

"The head will be carrying out a review of the circumstances to ensure nothing like this can happen again.

"This was a rare and isolated incident. We take any incident involving a weapon very seriously."

The 15-year-old boy was arrested and questioned by police before being released on bail. He has not been charged. Police have recovered a craft knife.

Officers will interview Longhill pupils and staff in the next few days.

Longhill is a non-selective comprehensive school which has about 1,000 pupils aged 11 to 16.
