With our neighbourhood and environment seriously under threat from overdevelopment, feelings did indeed run high at the meeting about plans for the former Endeavour Motors site in Preston Road, Brighton (The Argus, November 3).

It's true that not all of those present were as articulate and educated as the main spokesman, architect Piers Gough.

Some of us lack the confidence to stand up and put forward our views at a public meeting of this kind or challenge the rather intimidating and well-organised team of experts the developer Josh Aghiros has marshalled.

But that doesn't mean we have no right to feel angry that an application for an ugly tower block, which has already been rejected once, has simply been re-submitted with a few minor changes.

The council seems determined to pursue a tall buildings strategy to meet the housing problem at any cost, even adjacent to a conservation area such as Preston Park.

Lawrence Alkin (Letters, November 5) gives a distorted picture of opinion at the meeting. The majority of those present were not in favour of the tower block proposal.

Many eloquent and passionate speeches were also made by local residents to whom Mr Gough's outsize design does not make "perfect sense" in a low-rise residential area or against the picturesque Victorian viaduct.

Attempts to rubbish opponents of controversial building plans are a typical tactic of developers and undermines any sense of integrity Mr Alkin believes they have.
