Teenage hooker Nathan Ring piled up 14 points as Eastbourne beat Uckfield in London Four South East.

Ring scored a late try and also kicked a penalty and three conversions to ease Eastbourne home 24-8.

The key score, however, was outside centre Gavin Partridge's second try of the game.

It was a superb 60-yard counter-attack effort after Uckfield had clawed back to 10-8 and were pressing the Eastbourne line.

Nick Ridley scored a try and Ed Gannon kicked a penalty for Uckfield.

Crawley dragged themselves off the bottom of the division with a convincing 25-0 home win over Betteshanger, combining solid work at the set pieces with plenty of flair outside.

Andy Evans kicked two penalties and then converted after Richard Billings powered through to break some resilient Betteshanger defence.

Trevor Russell was driven over after the break and No.8 Rob Dowling claimed a push over.

Team manager Geoff Lodge said: "It was an excellent all-round performance and there lies the rub. When we play 15-man rugby it is a delight to watch. When we don't, things go horribly wrong."

East Grinstead were pipped 27-22 at Aylesford in an excellent contest from which referee David Robertshaw earned high marks.

Gs went 12-0 up through tries by Mike Ayres and John Houghton and a Steve O'Relly conversion.

Ten minutes of madness saw Aylesford go 22-12 up at the break but O'Reilly converted a Jack Thompson try and added a penalty to tie the scores.

Gs, who had impressed at the lineout, lost their own throw-in just when it really mattered, leading to Aylesford's winning try with four minutes to play.

The club have received a boost when Paul Day was spared a suspension for his recent red card at Crawley after an opposing player gave evidence in his defence.
