New Conservative leader Michael Howard was all smiles as he addressed the party faithful in Brighton last night.

Mr Howard was keeping a long-standing appointment to attend Brighton and Hove Conservative's annual dinner but had expected to address them as shadow chancellor.

He arrived to rapturous applause at the Alias Seattle Hotel at Brighton Marina escorted by Brighton and Hove Conservative leader Brian Oxley.

Mr Howard said: "It's been quite a day and I think the message comes loud and clear that the Conservative Party is on its way."

Hove and Hangleton Tory chairman Dave Smart got cheers when he asked Mr Howard to remind John Prescott Brighton and Hove Albion needed a stadium.

A grinning Mr Howard said: "I'll do my best. I know the fact you haven't got a stadium means it's been a bit difficult for you to keep your managers."
