Staff will video violence as part of a raft of measures which have saved an East Sussex nightclub from closure.

Sussex Police had applied for the licence at the G-Spot nightclub to be revoked following disorder at the venue.

The force acted after more than 100 incidents were recorded at the club in Hastings Old Town during a ten-month period.

However, after lengthy discussions between licensing officers and club representatives, licensing justices in Hastings imposed strict conditions on the licence instead.

It means the club will remain open and more than £70,000 will now be spent on a raft of improvements, which will be in place by February 28.

These include an additional CCTV system, a walk-through metal detector for clubbers and the appointment of at least one qualified member of security staff for every 50 members of the public.

Staff will also be responsible for filming disorder with a hand-held video camera, all drinks will be served in plastic cups and cans and a noise limiting device will be installed.

All doormen will have to be registered with Hastings Borough Council, all club incidents will be logged in a computerised diary and customers will be ejected via the front door only.

Owner Kim Johnson or a duty manager must be on the premises whenever they are open and recommendations raised by an independent consultant must be implemented by March 1 next year.

The club will undergo a major overhaul, including a new name, refurbishment of the interior and new security doors and signs.

Mr Johnson said: "We've had our problems but we have put those behind us now and are looking forward to a fantastic future."
