A brother and sister whose mother died from cancer have collected more than £2,200 for the hospice which cared for her.

Charlie Burden, ten, and his sister, Daisy, six, have been gathering donations from family, friends and colleagues of their late mum, Mandy, in aid of The Martlets Hospice, Hove.

Mandy died aged 38 last month. The breast cancer she was originally diagnosed with had spread to other parts of her body.

Overwhelmed by the care she received from staff, Mandy asked her family to give her the cheapest funeral possible and give all the money saved to the hospice.

Instead of flowers, she asked people to donate money to the charity.

Mandy was cremated at Woodvale crematorium, Brighton, on Tuesday last week and donations have been pouring in.

Charlie and Daisy, who live in Woodingdean with their father and Mandy's husband, Jeff, have been helping their grandmother Grace Prowse, count the money and make a list of donors.

Mandy's former colleagues at Lloyds TSB in Brighton, where she worked for more than 13 years before leaving to become a swimming teacher, have also donated £250 to The Martlets.

Mandy was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999.

She had an operation but in November last year she developed what she thought was a chest infection. When it did not clear she went to the doctor and it was discovered the breast cancer had spread to one of her lungs.

The tumour was inoperable but chemotherapy seemed to reduce the size of it.

When Mandy's speech then became slurred, tests revealed she had tumours in her brain.

Mandy became weak and at the end of August she spent 18 days at The Martlets.

She went back home but continued to grow weaker and went back to The Martlets in October where she died.

Mandy's father, Dave Prowse, said: "She put a brave face on everything and slowly she got to the point where in the last couple of days she was bedridden.

"She never complained throughout. We were overwhelmed by the response to her death.

"I have never come across any set of people who have cared so much for their fellow human beings as those at the hospice."
