I welcome the initiatives taken by Ken Jones, Chief Constable of Sussex, to root out racism.

However, I would like to see the declaration which officers are being asked to sign made compulsory, rather than voluntary.

It is vital that the public have complete confidence in the police and that officers trust each other.

At long last the police have acknowledged there is a problem and are trying to put their house in order.

The sort of behaviour that was seen on the BBC documentary The Secret Policeman has no place in the police or society.
