Crawley's season is up and running after a 28-17 derby win at home to East Grinstead.

The result is not enough to drag them off the foot of London Four South East but it does reduce to three the number of Sussex teams still looking for their first win in regional or national divisions.

Crawley twice came from seven points down before scrum half Doyle settled matters with a late try.

Team manager Geoff Lodge believes his side are now beginning to gel.

He said: "This was always going to be a close-run contest but our forwards dominated, which was key to the result."

Paul Day's try gave Gs an early lead with David Jones converting but Doyle set-up Andy Evans for a super try to bring the scores level.

Will Rice restored Gs' lead, Jones again adding the extra points in the absence of Steve O'Reilly.

Prop Denham, though, crossed for Crawley and Evans nudged them ahead at the break with a penalty.

Day was sent-off early in the second half but great defence from Gs kept Crawley to an Evans drop goal to make it 18-14.

Mike Ayres replied with a penalty but Evans kicked a penalty plus the last conversion, to make sure of the home win.
