Perhaps it is because Iain Duncan Smith represents, in the detractors' view, a traditional, evangelical wing of politics that they seek to undermine him.
Do the detractors really wish to see a Gene Robinson-style leader of the Conservative Party, rather than one who will bring more widely acceptable alternative policies to the fore?
