Young women in the UK are Europe's heaviest drinkers when they go out, according to a report published today.
The average 18 to 24-year-old woman in this country consumes almost three-and-a-half times as much alcohol as Italian women of the same age.
The results are contained in a report from market analysts Datamonitor, which found men and women in the UK spent £32.8 billion a year on alcohol in places such as pubs, restaurants and nightclubs.
The wine-loving French are the next closest, spending £31.4 billion, followed by Germany at £21.6 billion.
Noticeable from the report is how much more young women drink, compared with the female population as a whole.
While the average woman in the UK consumes 108 litres of alcoholic drink a year, 18 to 24-year-olds down 203 litres. There is no sign of the trend slowing, with the report predicting young women will drink 242 litres a year by 2007.
