A leading architect will come face to face with campaigners fighting his plans for a skyscraper.

Piers Gough will explain why his 16-storey tower should be built at the former Endeavour Garage site in Preston Road, Brighton.

A public meeting to discuss the multi-million pound project has been called by developers Karis Developments.

Managing director Josh Arghiros, professional consultants and Brighton-based Mr Gough - from architects CZWG - will talk about the scheme and say why they believe it will enhance and regenerate the area.

Martin Bacon, chief executive of the Civic Trust, will be in the chair. The trust is the national umbrella organisation for conservation organisations.

Karis spokeswoman Heather James said: "We are motivated only to develop and build beautiful buildings and we believe Piers has designed a building that really delivers on this score."

Part of the scheme has already received planning permission and is being built. The slim tower is the controversial element.

If it is approved, Karis will sign a legal agreement committed to providing 40 per cent social housing.

Mr Gough is also involved with plans for the redevelopment of the King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove.

The meeting will be held at the Sallis Benney Theatre in Brighton University's Grand Parade site on October 31 at 7pm.
