It was sad to see Hove MP Ivor Caplin refuse to accept a petition from peace campaigners.

Well known for his pro-war stance as a Government Defence Minister, Mr Caplin paradoxically represents many constituents in Hove who disagree with him and oppose UK intervention in Iraq.

He has no right to refuse to listen to his constituents, even if he does not share their views.

It damages our democracy for an MP to behave as though people with whom he disagrees can be ignored.

Unfortunately, this arrogance seems to be prominent among politicians who have been in power for too long.

Coun Simon Williams (Green) St Peters and North Laine Ward, Brighton and Hove City Council Get involved IN response to David Anthony (Letters, October 10), I agree that we need young people to get involved in politics.

In Portslade, the Conservative party is actively looking at ways to encourage younger people to become interested in politics and to exercise their right to vote.

After all, it's what democracy is all about. Activities should be aimed at all age groups. Schools should be making pupils more aware of the importance in not only voting but also in actually standing up for local issues.

There is by no means a "no vacancies" sign hanging in our window.

If young people want to get involved, we will encourage them and if they are the right person for the job when it comes to the local elections, they will get the opportunity to stand.
