Valerie Paynter (Letters, October 10) asks why the council didn't try to move Hove Museum to Hove Town Hall, like we're proposing with the library.

We did not need to. As the Museum and Art Gallery only operates on two levels, it was possible to use a lift and minor alterations to access all areas.

Not only do the modifications comply with national building regulations and the new disability standards, but we have also had many compliments about the ease of access and enhanced displays achieved through the Heritage Lottery funding, particularly the new children's gallery and the cinematic collections.

A lift can't be made to access all areas in Hove Library and installing one could ruin the building.

By the way, yes, Ian Jenkinson, the leaflet circulated by Christopher Hawtree was a trick, as you might expect.

It makes no reference to the fact this is all about being family-friendly as well as providing disabled access.

I can only assume Mr Hawtree doesn't care whether people with mobility problems can use our libraries.

We spent £500,000 transforming the museum, which gives the lie to his long-standing and rather oddball theory that there is a plot to obliterate Hove.
