Boxer Neil Wray is hoping a lack of cash won't shatter his dreams of going for Olympic gold.

The Adur Amateur Boxing Club (formerly Southwick) light-welterweight goes to Durham this weekend for an England training camp after being selected for the senior international against Norway on October 30.

It is the 22-year-old's first senior call-up, having already represented England as a junior against Northern Ireland when he knocked out the Irish champion.

Wray is hoping to impress the England selectors in Norway later this month and force his way into the reckoning for the Olympic squad for Athens 2004.

Last season's senior ABA national championship semi-finalist said: "When I was at the last England training camp, the main coach told us that six people had been selected for next year's Olympics but any of us at the camp could also earn a place.

"That gave me a boost and my goal is to box at the Olympics."

However, the former Army boxer is worried that a lack of cash may hamper his ambitions.

He said: "I am looking for a sponsor to help me out with equipment and training. I am working at the moment but if I was able to take a few days off a week I would be able to really dedicate myself to my sport."

Wray was selected for the England squad despite snubbing a training squad call-up earlier in the year.

"That may of worked in my favour," said Wray. "I did a piece in the Boxing News complaining that England rely on the same boys all the time and don't give others a chance. Since then I have been called up for my first international and I will get my first senior vest."

West Hill's Jason Brooker (40kg) boxes for England in a Schools' ABA inter-nation competition against Wales at Broadplains Club, Bristol next Saturday. Brooker boxes Welsh champion Nicky Evans.
