As someone born and bred in Hove, I was horrified to read that plans to move the library to Hove Town Hall have resurfaced (The Argus, September 25).

Hove library is a beautiful building, light and airy, full of character and history.

If the building is disposed of, it will be the last nail in the coffin of Hove's civic pride.

I cannot understand how the managers and councillors can even contemplate such a move.

There are no problems at Hove library that could not be overcome if the will was there.

After all, there is the shining example of Hove museum just down the road, which has been wonderfully brought up to modern standards.

There is also the question of Hove library having listed building status.

This might prove a disincentive to prospective developers.

If the library moves, the building is deserted and the heating switched off, it would undoubtedly deteriorate rapidly.

The council cannot allow a listed building to simply rot away and will be responsible for its upkeep.

Instead of a quick-fix solution, the council might be landed with a white elephant.

Has this been properly thought through?

Plans to move were first mooted two years ago but since then events have moved on in Church Road and the new Tesco has revitalised this part of the road.

It would therefore be folly in the extreme to move from such a bustling site to the backwaters of Norton Road.
