Hove Library is a splendid building but, with due respect to Christopher Hawtree (The Argus September 30), it has major failings as a modern library.

The staff are helpful and everything that can be done to try to make it work as a library is being done.

But the building simply is not suited to modern needs. It is a warren of small rooms spread over different floors.

There is insufficient desk space for users and the IT provision needs to be developed.

The difficulties around meeting disability access are an opportunity to improve the library provision in Hove for everyone.

Perhaps we need to concentrate on making the proposed new library the best that can be.

We should also be discussing how we might continue to use what is probably the most attractive building in Church Road.
