Millions of pounds could be heading to Worthing if the town becomes the green capital of Britain.

West Sussex County Council bosses want the resort to become a showcase for tempting travellers out of their cars.

The council has put Worthing forward for a Government scheme to find a sustainable travel demonstration town.

If accepted, millions of pounds will be spent on a wide range of schemes to reduce pollution and congestion.

Councillor Tex Pemberton, West Sussex Cabinet member for strategic environmental services, said: "The competition is likely to be intense because the Department for Transport says it is looking to develop only one or two showcase towns or cities.

"However, my transport team has put in a very strong case for selecting Worthing and there is widespread support from key partners, including Worthing Borough Council, which is committed to working together with us if this bid is successful.

"In view of the fact the Government has so far turned down the improvements to the A27 between Worthing and Lancing as proposed in the multi-modal study, I am hoping this will strengthen the application to launch a series of innovative travel schemes to reduce dependence on the car.

"The showcase bid should not be seen as a substitute for the A27 improvements that the vast majority of people want to see.

"However, it would make a difference to traffic conditions and the choice of travel in the area."

Up to £1.5 million could be pumped into the town for the scheme every year for up to five years.

Participating local authorities would also be expected to make a significant contribution.

The type of schemes that could be involved in the project include:

Launching car sharing clubs
Major improvements to bus services with on-street ticket machines or Smart card technology to reduce queuing
Improved access to the five railway stations in and around the town
More cycle routes and a loan-a-bike scheme
Opening a one-stop shop in the town as a base for the project team where people could receive advice and information about travel schemes
Urging more parents to abandon their cars for the school run
Developing staff travel plans and launching a dedicated Worthing web site to promote car sharing and help people plan their journeys.
