Richard Montgomerie and Tony Cottey shared an unbroken century stand for the second-wicket to give Sussex a boost on the opening morning of the County Championship clash at Hove.

They encountered few difficulties in cloudy conditions at the County Ground as Sussex looked to gain revenge for their early season defeat at Edgbaston.

Sussex, who have not beaten Warwickshire in the Championship since 1992, lost Murray Goodwin off the fifth ball.

Pakistani Test fast bowler Waqar Younis struck the blow, having him caught down the leg side by keeper Tony Frost for his first Championship duck of the season.

Cottey played his first delivery from Waqar to the square leg boundary and Montgomerie's first four arrived when he thumped Melvyn Betts to the mid-wicket fence.

Montgomerie, left out of all Sussex's Twenty20 games, later opened up to pull Waqar for four before cracking his next delivery through mid-wicket.

Dougie Brown was introduced as Warwickshire's first change in place of Waqar and Cottey greeted him with a boundary past gully to put up the 50.

Cottey square drove Alan Richardson for another boundary before helping himself to three in succession off Ian Bell. His fourth half century in five innings came off 76 balls with ten fours.
