One of Sussex's busiest main roads is to be repaired because it is being undermined by rabbits.

Highways chiefs expect work to start on Monday October 6 to repair the A27, between Berwick and Wilmington, where rabbits have burrowed in the sandy soil beneath the road.

Temporary traffic lights will operate at night for two weeks.

Road strengthening will be followed by the installation of four speed cameras at accident black spots on the road between Lewes and Polegate.

Cameras will start operating at the Ashcombe roundabout, Beddingham level crossing, on the Firle straight and at Selmeston.

The cameras are being installed as the Highways Agency investigates what can be done to reduce accidents on the A27 east of Lewes.

Transport secretary Alistair Darling ordered the safety review after he rejected plans for a dual carriageway.

Lewes MP Norman Baker said: "I am quite sure the provision of cameras will change driver behaviour and help reduce the accident risk."
