A man from Chichester has been found hanged in his cell at Lewes Prison.
Leon David Marshall, 27, was discovered by staff at 8pm last night.
A spokesman for the Home Office said Marshall, originally from Chichester, was pronounced dead at 9.15pm after staff attempts to resuscitate him failed.
"We can confirm that Leon David Marshall was found hanging in his cell at 8pm yesterday," he said.
"Staff attempted to resuscitate and paramedics took him to an outside hospital where unfortunately the prisoner was pronounced dead.
"The police, coroner and next of kin have been informed and there will be, as always, an internal prison investigation."
Marshall, who was sentenced to three years in prison in 2002 for indecent assault, returned to custody after being accused of breaching his probation licence.
