Three people have been killed in two crashes on East Sussex roads.

Two work colleagues died in a three-vehicle collision on the A21 at Vinehall Street, John's Cross, near Robertsbridge.

And an 18-year-old passenger from Eastbourne died despite the driver travelling two miles in his badly-damaged car to get him to hospital.

The three vehicles in collision outside Vinehall School were a blue Volvo estate, a Toyota Carina saloon and a van.

Police say the driver and passenger in the Toyota, who were travelling home to St Leonards, died at the scene of the 5pm crash.

Sergeant Keith Ellis, of the Road Policing Unit, Bexhill, said today: "It was a horrific sequence of events after a fairly hefty damage-only impact initially."

The Volvo driver, a 38-year-old woman from Robertsbridge, suffered shock while the van driver from Rochester, Kent, received cuts and bruises.

He was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings, while a third passenger in the Toyota escaped injury.

The road was closed for more than five hours by firefighters, police and paramedics.

Meanwhile, a man aged 18 died following a crash labelled one of the most unusual firefighters in Eastbourne have dealt with.

A Mazda 323 being driven west on Carew Road, Eastbourne, just before 11pm yesterday crashed into a parked Volkswagen Golf and a telegraph pole.

The car was severely damaged, leaving the badly-injured 18-year-old pinned into his passenger seat.

But the driver, 25, from Eastbourne, drove the car two miles to the Eastbourne District General Hospital instead of dialling 999 from the scene.

He managed to park the mangled car in the hospital's car park opposite the accident and emergency department before calling for help.

Firefighters had to cut the car roof off and lever the passenger door open to release the trapped man while he was attached to drips.

He died in hospital from his injuries.

Leading Firefighter Bob Newton said: "To drive two miles after a serious crash with a passenger literally pinned in his seat was most bizarre and I've never dealt with anything like it."
